Max Vinetz

Composer - Bassist

line and color (2023)

Program note:

While composing this work, I was interested in composing out monophonic lines, orchestrating the lines, and then creating rhythmic canons as a way to generate some simple harmony. Thinking back to the title of this work, the composed monophonic gestures represent "lines" while the resulting harmonies from the canons create "color." As a lover of visual art and a student of art history, I have long found myself struck by the heavily contrasting manners in which painters have explored gesture, line, and color in their own work. Artists that immediately come to mind are Wassily Kandinsky, Barnett Newman, and Mark Rothko, whose works vary from clearly zoned, demarcated canvases to larger-than-life scale color field paintings. After considering gesture as line and harmony (or mode) as color, I was interested in rhythmic orientation and different ways to feel, abstract, and transform a sense pulse within the piece.
